Black Cohosh may be related to liver damage.
01 August 2006
The UK medicines Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a warning about possible harmful effects of the herbal medicine Black Cohosh. All health problems thought to be related to drugs and herbal medicines are reported by doctors and pharmacists in the UK.
Of the 31 reports about Black Cohosh, 22 were related to liver damage, although most of these women have recovered. These included 6 cases of hepatitis, 15 abnormal liver function and 1 case of liver failure. There will now be a warning on Black Cohosh. Women with a history of liver complaints should not take Black Cohosh and anyone who develops liver problems should stop taking Black Cohosh and seek medical advice.
