Smoking may lead to an early menopause.
01 July 2007
A Norwegian research team collected information on over 2,000 women aged 59-60 to look at factors that may have affected their age at menopause. Women who were smoking at the time had an almost 60% increased chance of an early menopause, with periods stopping before the age of 40. Women who had given up smoking more than 10 years earlier reduced their risk. Passive smoking, coffee or alcohol did not appear to lead to an early menopause.
