MRI scanning may be better than plain mammography (xray screening) at detecting breast cancer.
01 August 2007

Researchers in the USA compared mammography, an ultrasound scan and MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) of the breast. They took over 170 women who were at high risk of developing breast cancer and performed all 3 tests on them. Six of the women had a breast cancer but only the MRI scan picked up all 6. However, more women who have MRI scanning will need a biopsy (sample of tissue taken from the breast), many of which will be normal. They concluded that MRI may be a useful addition to standard mammography for high risk women.
